This book reminds me of the book Flowers for Algernon. The boy in this book is definitely higher functioning than the protagonist in Flowers for Algernon. This story begins with the death of a neighbor's dog. The tale is told in plain language, but reveals complicated relationships revolving around the main character. He discovers things he didn't expect as he tries to investigate the death of the dog. Read this book for a window into the world of Aspergers and Autism. It is worth a read, and is accessible to almost all reading levels.
